It is surrounded with 12 EU stars. The coin was designed at Mint of Finland, based on a proposal by sculptor Raimo Heino submitted in a metal coin design competition in 1988. The common reverse side of all Eurozone coins, symbolising the union, was designed by Luc Luycx of the Royal Mint of Belgium in 1996. The silver circle of the coin is made of copper-nickel. Inside the gold-coloured centre, there is a thin nickel layer coated with a gold-coloured alloy containing 75% copper, 20% zinc and 5% nickel.
