Collector Coin Committee

Decisions on minting collector coins are taken by the Ministry of Finance, which has appointed the Collector Coin Committee to manage the practical aspects of this undertaking. The Committee consists of representatives of the Ministry, the Mint and from worlds of art and culture.

The Committee independently prepares proposals for new collector coins. Corporate and non-corporate entities may also suggest a topic for commemoration to the Committee or to the Ministry of Finance. Once the Ministry of Finance gives the nod, the Committee organises a design competition and selects the winner. Finally, the Committee proposes to the Ministry the execution of the winning design.

The Committee is headed by Professor Yrjö Sotamaa of the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.

The Committee members are:

  • Mint of Finland's CEO Paul Gustafsson
  • Senior Budget Secretary Marja Kirppu of the Ministry of Finance
  • Adjunct Professor Maria Lähteenmäki of the University of Helsinki and
  • Chief Curator Heikki Malme of Ateneum Art Museum
  • Head of Currency Department Mauri Lehtinen Bank of Finland

In its deliberations, the Committee consults experts (SAFA, The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo, The Association of Finnish Sculptors) as well as other with knowledge of each topic at hand.

Design Competitions

There are two kinds of design competitions for collector coins. Traditionally, the competition involves one stage in which the artist submits his or her proposal to the Collector Coin Committee in the form of a plaster cast. The design competition for ethical collector coins consists of two stages. Sketches are submitted to the Collector Coin Committee, and a preliminary jury selects five proposals for the plaster casting stage. The winner is selected from among these proposals. Information on current design competitions and results are available in the news archive.

For more information on collector coin competitions, contact the secretary of the Collector Coin Committee, Executive Assistant Maija Hiiri, maija.hiiri(at)mint.fi, tel. 0400 485 548.
