Coin for fan of opera and great emotions.

Tribute to the queen of opera stages. The Aino Ackté and Finnish Opera coin was issued in 2001 in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the singer's birth. The coin depicts a great opera diva who got her way even if it meant stamping her feet in rage.

Aino Ackté (24 April 1876, Helsinki – 8 August 1944, Vihti) was the most famous Finnish singer of the turn of the 20th century. She started as a lyric soprano in the Paris Grand Opera and went on to become the European star of dramatic operas.

The highlights of Ackté's career include Faust's Marguerite, Lohengrin's Elsa, Tannhäuser's Elisabeth, Tosca, and Strauss's Salome, her favourite role. In later years, Ackté was actively involved in promoting Finnish opera.

Mother's vocal student becomes as an internationally known singer

Born to the mezzo-soprano Emmy Strömmer-Achté and the composer-conductor Lorenz Nikolai Achté, Aino began her vocal studies under her mother's instruction.

At the age of 17, performing at her mother's concert, Aino caught everyone’s attention with her clean and effortless technique. This was followed by great success, and soon after in 1894, Achté left for Paris where she was accepted as the best candidate among 197 to study at the Conservatoire under Edmond Duvernoy.

After three years of study, Aino Ackté was signed by the Paris Grand Opera. Her portrayal of Marguerite in Gounod's Faust was a great success.

Star of big stages

Ackté sang in Paris for six years, moving from lyric roles to more dramatic parts, performing Wagner and others. At the height of her career, Ackté toured the great stages of Europe from Paris to London and Germany. She sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1904–1906.

Ackté moved to Finland in 1913 after finishing her international career. Her farewell performance at the Finnish Opera was as Tosca in 1920. Her last public performance was in a small supporting role at the 1930 Opera Festival at the Olavinlinna castle.

Contributor of Finnish operatic art

Aino Ackté worked relentlessly to promote Finnish operatic arts. She founded the predecessor of the Finnish National Opera with Edvard Fazer and organized summer opera festivals at Savonlinna from 1912–1916 and 1930. Ackté was also a successful vocal instructor.

The highlights of Ackté's career include Faust's Marguerite, Lohengrin's Elsa, Tannhäuser's Elisabeth, Tosca, and Strauss's Salome, her favourite role.
