The Cabbage Garden Rabbit filigree coin is an exceptional piece of numismatic art and part of Mint of Finland’s Chinese Horoscope commemorative coin series. The Cabbage Garden Rabbit filigree coin is traditional hand-craft art and a centerpiece for modern design. In the middle of the coin there is a delicate rabbit made of filigree. Filigree has not been used for minting coins in the past. The Cabbage Garden Rabbit filigree coin is one of Mint of Finland’s coins for the Year of the Rabbit commemorative coin theme. In the Chinese horoscope, 2011 is the year of the rabbit. The centre of the collector coin features a stylised filigree rabbit. Numismatic Art made of Silver Thread The filigree technique has been used in jewellery making for thousands of years but it has never been used in coin minting before. Filigree is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of silver or other alloys. Silver thread is not much thicker than hair, which is why filigree-making is detailed work that requires skill. In the Cabbage Garden Rabbit Filigree coin, fine silver thread has been twisted into a motif depicting a rabbit sitting inside a large cabbage.
