The Cabbage Garden Rabbit filigree coin is one of Mint of Finland’s coins for the Year of the Rabbit commemorative coin theme. In the Chinese horoscope, 2011 is the year of the rabbit. The centre of the collector coin features a stylised filigree rabbit.

Numismatic Art made of Silver Thread

The filigree technique has been used in jewellery making for thousands of years but it has never been used in coin minting before. Filigree is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of silver or other alloys.

Silver thread is not much thicker than hair, which is why filigree-making is detailed work that requires skill. In the Cabbage Garden Rabbit Filigree coin, fine silver thread has been twisted into a motif depicting a rabbit sitting inside a large cabbage.
