Celebrating a sea that has many faces
The commemorative coin passes the message from one generation to another of what is important to us. The campaign for the protection of the Baltic Sea will get a new symbol on 31 October. Voters from around the world chose the design by Kajaani high-school student Essi Kulju, "Life at sea", for the Baltic Sea-themed collector coin.

After the decision of the Finnish Ministry of Finance and the European Commission, the 2011 two-euro commemorative coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Bank of Finland. The coin that will be issued on October 17 displays a Finnish swan design by the famous gold-coin artist Hannu Veijalainen.

Mint of Finland Ltd, which produces metallic circulation and collector coins, has bought the entire share capital of the German coin-blank manufacturer Saxonia EuroCoin GmbH from DNick Holding plc, which is the manufacturer of nickel and nickel alloys listed on the unofficial registered market in Germany. The deal has established the strongest coin manufacturer in the Eurozone. Since the deal took place, the budgeted turnover for Mint of Finland Group in 2011 is EUR over 120 million.

Secondary school students from the Baltic Sea region will design the ethical commemorative coin for 2011. Its theme is the protection of the Baltic Sea. The contest began on 25 March 2011 and will end on 3 June 2011.

Mint of Finland will be presenting its 2011 Purple Programme on 28.1.2010 at the Berlin World Money Fair from 10.30 – 14.00 in the Estrel Media Forum. The Kaj Franck and Industrial Art collector coin and the Pehr Kalm collector coin will both be launched at Mint of Finland’s stand on 28.1 at 14.30. The World Money Fair this year celebrates its 40th year and Mint of Finland has participated in nearly 20 of those events.

In 2011 it will be 125 years since the birth of Hella Wuolijoki. To commemorate this, a silver 10 euro collector coin will be minted. The Collector Coin Committee issued an invitation to compete for the design of the coin and seven entries arrived by the deadline. The winning entry came from the architect Petri Neuvonen and was entitled ‘The roots of the tales’ (Tarinoiden juuret). The prize committee praised his work for its balance and its multidimensional nature, noting that it was aesthetically laid out and that it presents a clear image of the strong character it represents.

US publishers Krause Publications is polling its readership to find the most innovative, creative, beautiful and popular commemorative coin in the world’s most prestigious numismatic competition. The public can pick its favourite from among 15 commemorative coins issued during 2009. The ‘People’s Choice’ vote is one of eleven categories in this famous numismatic competition. One of the coins is the Peace and Security commemorative coin which was the first of the Mint of Finland’s Ethical Coins series and which earlier this year won in the category ‘Best Crown’.
