Today Mint of Finland Ltd. is issuing a gold collector coin honouring the 200th anniversary of the Diet of Porvoo.

The coin's issue will be commemorated during a presentation of the first three numbered collector coins to the country’s top leaders at the Diet of Porvoo’s 200th anniversary. The event will be held in Porvoo on March 28, 2009. The collector coins will be presented to President Tarja Halonen, Speaker of Parliament Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.

The collector coin was designed by sculptor Reijo Paavilainen. The theme of Paavilainen’s coin, Anno Domini 1809, won the recent competition organised by the Collector Coin Committee. Paavilainen’s design portrays the façade of the Porvoo church, the first location of the Diet of Porvoo. The collector coin has a nominal value of 100 euros. It weighs 6.78 g, has a diameter of 22 mm and a gold content of 91.7 percent. A total of 7,500 minted proof coins will be issued.

”Finnish collector coins are mementos and works of art, documenting some of the most important milestones in the nation’s history, for future generations to admire. Mint of Finland has the pleasure and honour to participate in this important task,” says Maarit Aarni-Sirviö, Mint of Finland’s CEO.
