Ricky Rapper (actor Severi Heikkilä) officially supervised the raffle

To the designer of the Children and Creativity collector coin, creativity means making the impossible possible

Over 1,000 visitors to Mint of Finland’s website voted for Roope Määttä’s design, Taivaanrannan tuolla puolen (Over the Horizon) to help choose the theme of the Children and Creativity collector coin, to be launched on October 20. Määttä is an art student at the Kajaani Upper Secondary School. Severi Heikkilä from the children’s movie Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief officially supervised the voters’ raffle.

For the first time, a collector coin’s theme was selected by public vote. Between May 18 and June 18, 2010, visitors to Mint of Finland’s website were able to vote for their favourite design from among 11 potential coin designs to help choose the theme of the Children and Creativity collector coin. All competing artworks were created by students at fine art high schools. 48 designs participated in the competition.

Towards the Impossible and Beyond

The winning design, Taivaanrannan tuolla puolen (Over the Horizon) was designed by Roope Määttä, an art student at the Kajaani Upper Secondary School.

“I think creativity is aspiring to the impossible and seeing beyond it. Taivaanrannan tuolla puolen depicts a moment when an impossible thing comes to pass, and another is reached for. My design also shows that one should always remembers one’s roots,” Määttä says.

The runner-up was Hiekkaleikkejä (Sand Games), a design by Jonna Poutiainen, a student at the Helsinki Upper Secondary School of the Visual Arts. Tutkiva luovuus (Investigative Creativity) by Katri Piri, a student at the Tiirismaa Upper Secondary School in Lahti, won third place.

Heikkilä was granted a special licence to mint a silver collector coin. “I thank you for the honour of letting me visit Mint of Finland,” Heikkilä said. Upon seeing the silver farewell gift, Heikkilä’s eyes welled in astonishment: “Is this actually made of real silver?”
